Periodontics

Periodontal simply means “the tissue around the teeth.” Periodontists specialize in the treatment and surgery of this area, which is often characterized by gum disease. Plaque (bacteria) is the most common element causing gum disease.

Periodontal disease (periodontitis) is a persistent bacterial infection in the gums.  Toxins and enzymes produced by specific bacteria found in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate an inflammatory response that begins to break down the tissues and bone that support the teeth.  Periodontitis can cause irreversible damage to the gums and bone, and can lead to tooth loss.

Evolving research is pointing to a relationship between periodontal disease and more serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and pre-term, low birthweight babies.

Treating periodontal disease is a team effort involving the patient, the dentist, dental hygienist and possibly a referral to a periodontist. The effects of gum disease can be damaging to your dental health, and your overall health as well. However, through proper preventive care and oral hygiene, you can avoid problems associated with gum disease.
